Why Structured Data Matters for SEO
In the latest episode of our “SEO for Beginners” series, we delve into SEO Factor number nine: Use Structural Data. Structured data, SHEma Markup, and Rich Snippets are pivotal to improving your website’s visibility and click-through rates in search engine results. But what exactly do these terms mean, and why should you care about them?
What is Structured Data?
Structured data is specific code that you can implement on your web pages to make it easier for search engines like Google to understand the content on your site.
For example, a product page containing details like price, availability, and ratings might be comprehensible to human visitors, but Google bots may struggle to interpret this information unless it is structured in a particular format.
This structured data can involve formats for a variety of data types, such as:
- Books
- Movies
- Ratings
- Courses
- Recipes
- Events
- Local business info
- FAQ pages
Using structured data provides Google and other search engines with a better understanding of your website content, which can lead to an enriched display in search results, known as rich snippets.
Understanding Rich Snippets
Rich snippets are search results that display more exhaustive information than standard search results. These can include images, ratings, vote counts, bake or prep times, etc. For example, imagine searching for a recipe.
Instead of just seeing a simple link to a webpage, you see the recipe’s rating, cook time, and other valuable details right in the search results. This enhanced display is far more appealing and likely to grab the attention of users.
Here’s what Sean Mathis had to say: “So if you look at this, you can see that this is a search result here about ice cream that does not have the rich snippets turned on. It doesn’t have that structural data added to the webpage. But let me show you one that actually does.
So you can see this one here actually is a rich snippet result for the same query with the ice cream recipe. And you can see that this one people are going to click on better. It’s got a picture, it’s got a rating, it’s got votes. It tells you how long it takes you to make it.”
How to Implement Structured Data
To get started with structured data, you can use tools like Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper. This tool allows you to input the URL of the page you want to enhance, and then it guides you through the process of adding structured data elements. After completing the steps, you just need to copy and paste the updated code back onto your website.
Another excellent tool for adding rich snippets to your WordPress site is the Yoast SEO plugin. Sean explains: “So let me show you what this looks like in the back of my website with Yoast SEO.
So that is the plugin that I use for all of the SEO for our websites and our client’s websites, and it makes it super easy. That is also who wrote that fantastic article about rich snippets.”
