Where Did Your Google Reviews Go? How to Get Them Back and Protect Your Reputation

by | Google Business Profile, Marketing

Why Google Reviews Matter

If you’ve ever had a Google review vanish into thin air, you know the frustration.

Whether you run a bustling local museum or a small service-based business, reviews are social proof that clients trust, and each one can make a huge difference.

For service businesses where every client relationship is personal, and reviews are vital, missing Google reviews hits hard.

Recently, Torie Mathis from Lake Shark Media faced this exact issue. After working hard to gather new reviews from loyal clients, many were excitedly collected, only to disappear days later. Small businesses simply can’t afford to lose such crucial trust signals.

Why Google Reviews Vanish

First, let’s bust the myth that this only happens to you! Torie Mathis reports that missing Google reviews are “quite common,” especially for businesses that rely on personal connections and have fewer total reviews. But why do reviews disappear?

According to Google, reviews are typically removed for policy violations:

  • Spam
  • Inappropriate content
  • Advertising
  • Off-topic posts
  • Conflicts of interest

Sometimes, reviews get caught in Google’s filters even when they’re fully legitimate. And if you’ve had a suspended profile reinstated, you might lose reviews in the shuffle. Torie Mathis found that for schools and educational institutions, Google disables reviews entirely.

How to Get Missing Google Reviews Back

So, what’s a smart, savvy business owner to do? Torie Mathis walked step-by-step through the process for her own missing service-business reviews:

1. Contact Google Support
Go to your Google Business dashboard and report the missing review:

  • Select your business.
  • Type “Missing Review” in the help box.
  • Describe your issue.
  • File all the necessary details.

Tip: Save screenshots and emails of every new review as soon as you receive them. You’ll need the reviewer’s actual Google account name, not just the customer’s name!

2. Respond to Google’s Follow-Up
You might get a response suggesting the review is simply delayed in appearing between Search and Maps. Wait a few days, but don’t hesitate to reply if the issue isn’t resolved.

3. Appeal if Necessary
If your reviews have been removed and you’re confident they didn’t violate any policy, let Google know. As Torie Mathis experienced, most reviews were reinstated once she confirmed they met guidelines, a relief for any business owner!

4. Protect Your Reviews Moving Forward
Consistently back up your reviews and track who left which comments. If reviews matter to your reputation, safeguard that investment.
